Michele Dufresne

Recently, the employees at the gym I go to learned my name. I have been going there for five years, and no one had ever addressed me by name before. At my cycle class the other day, the instructor called out, “Michele, you’re doing great! Keep going!” And as I left, someone at the front desk said, “Have a great day, Michele!” Then it happened again today! OK, I know what they are doing . . . but it still makes me feel good when I hear my name!

When I first began making stories for our BookBuilder Software, it was my intention to just write very early books at Reading Recovery levels 1-3 (Guided Reading A-C). I knew that, for emergent readers, their own name was one word they would easily recognize and be able to self-monitor with. Our BookBuilder stories were designed to help these students gain footholds in print.

Initially, I was surprised by teachers’ demands for more BookBuilder stories at higher levels. Now I realize it’s the same as hearing my name at the gym. It feels great and it makes you feel special to see your name in a story—something everyone needs from time to time, no matter how old you are or how well you can read. Hope your students enjoy my latest BookBuilder story about Thanksgiving and that everyone has a wonderful holiday!
